The City of London is located on the original Roman settlement of Londinium. Founded around AD 50, Londinium grew to become a thriving town bustling with traders and people from every corner of the empire. This summer, 2,000 years on, the Romans return to the City with the Londinium season of events. Unearth the lost history and buried secrets of Roman London that lie beneath the City; explore London’s Roman baths, amphitheatre, Mithraeum and the Roman wall; and learn more about the history of London with a packed programme of interactive activities for all the family. Guildhall Yard is hosting a Roman-themed open air pop up cinema. London's Roman amphitheatre was where Gladiators exchanged blows — making it the perfect setting for an alfresco screening of Gladiator, amongst others. There will be Italian food, beer and cocktails to keep you fed and watered, but don't forget to bring a blanket.
Block Party Cinema at Juju’s Bar & Stage
Hidden behind two unassuming wooden doors in a brick wall, tucked away at the back of Ely's Yard, is one of Truman's best kept secrets: Juju's Bar & Stage. This beautiful old cavernous warehouse space has hosted everything from secret gigs and exhibitions to film shoots and, of course, some exceptionally riotous parties! When not under private hire the space functions as a bar and performing arts venue, hosting anything from cabaret to current affairs debates, comedy, spoken word, live music, dance classes and more. This Sunday, Block Party Cinema will be screening the Brazilian classic, City of God, there, with cocktails, samba dancing and a VR experience on site.
