Venus in Fur
After an in-demand Broadway transfer and a film adaptation by Roman Polanski, Venus in Fur finally comes to Theatre Royal Haymarket London. Sadomasochism and star power come to the London stage in a new production of Venus in Fur, starring Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones) and David Oakes. The intriguing 90-minute comedy revolves around an encounter between an actress and a director-cum-writer over one evening in modern Manhattan. Thomas Novachek is adapting and staging Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's 1870 novella, Venus in Furs. Despite the steamy subject matter, there is nothing sleazy or farcical about the production; Ives' script shimmers with suspense, and we look forward to seeing how Patrick Marber's direction manipulates the comedy into an exploration of eroticism and power. With just two actors on stage, the play depends on its stars – and the West End premiere certainly has a promising cast.
