Boom For Real
Discover the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, the pioneering prodigy of the 1980s downtown New York art scene. This unprecedented exhibition at the Barbican will be the first large-scale exhibition of the artist’s work in the UK, bringing together an outstanding selection of more than 100 works from international museums and private collections. Featuring rare film, photography and archive material, the show captures the spirit of this self-taught artist, poet, DJ and musician whose influence, since his death at 27 in 1988, has been enormous.
Inside: Art by offenders, secure patients and detainees

Antony Gormley, the renowned artist, curates an exhibition showcasing artwork produced in the UK’s prisons, secure hospitals and immigration removal centres, and by ex-offenders in the community. This year’s show at the Southbank Centre (21st Sept – 15th Nov) responds to the theme ‘Inside’, set by Gormley with input from prisoners, and aims to get people talking about the UK’s criminal justice system. The artworks are selected from over 7,000 pieces of fine art, design, writing and music entered to this year’s Koestler Awards.
